Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
Last Update: 31/03/2009
M80F terminals have embedded support for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).

Introduction to Virtual Desktop

This emerging technology allows thin clients to replace PCs. (As opposed to connecting to a centralised Windows/Citrix server.)

The physical PCs are replaced by virtual machines (normally XP or Vista) installed and consolidated onto a single server. The thin client uses RDP or ICA to connect to individual virtual PCs.

The connection between the thin client and virtual machine is arbitrated by a “Connection Broker”. This server is responsible for:
   - authenticating the thin client user
   - presenting a list of virtual machine (desktops) the user is authorised to access
   - managing the connection to the virtual machine selected.

Virtual Desktop brokers supported

The M80F currently supports:
   - VMware View Client
   - CITRIX Xen Desktop

Principle functionality:

On initial connection to the broker the terminal requests authentication (User name, password and domain):

After authentication a list of available desktops is displayed:

Once selected the terminal establishes a connection (RDP or ICA) to the virtual machine and the XP or Vista desktop is displayed:
