AX3000 IP TERMINALS

 AX3000 Model 75E

Axel are pleased to announce the latest addition to the AX3000 family of terminals, the Model 75E.

The Model 75E contains a new, powerful graphics engine that can take full advantage of today’s operating system caching and compression features.

Enhanced graphics and network support make the Model 75E the ideal terminal for graphics users either on a LAN or WAN.

Based on the same philosophy as all other Axel terminals, the Model 75E is operating system-less, and allows concurrent connection to conventional character based applications (Unix, Linux, AS/400, etc.).

The new features of the Model 75E are:
   - new powerful graphics engine
   - high screen resolution – up to 1280x1024 at 75hz,
   - 16 bits/pixel support - 65535 colors
   - 10/100 network auto-sensing interface
   - high display performances.

The RDP Protocol: a Direct Access to Windows

RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is the standard thin-client technology from Microsoft and an integral part of NT4 TSE, Windows 2000 Server and Advanced Server.

The Axel RDP4 client allows multiple terminal users to log onto a single Windows server and gives each user their own standard Windows desktop.

The RDP protocol is available as an optional feature for AX3000 models 65 and 65E (firmware option RDP).

 The DNS Protocol

Axel are pleased announce the availability of DNS functionality to complement the current DHCP option.

The Axel DNS Protocol is compliant with RFC 1035.

The DNS protocol is available as an optional feature for AX3000 models 65(E). Free firmware upgrades are available for existing M65(E) users.

What Advantage Does DNS Offer ?

The DNS protocol allows an English "NAME" to be associated with the IP address dynamically allocated to an AX3000 by DHCP. The DNS server manages a dynamic table of "NAME" and "IP address" associations. Any DNS client can access this database at any time to resolve a "NAME" and obtain the corresponding IP address.

This makes managing large networks much easier.

For example once DNS/DHCP are set up for a given network all terminals and hosts can be referred to simply by their English names.

There is no need to set an IP address for individual AX3000s as DHCP automatically allocates IP addresses on boot

As each terminal could have a different IP address each time it boots it us useful to have a consistent means of referring to that machine. DNS associates an English name to each AX3000 regardless of its current IP address.

This also permits the AX3000's embedded LPD to be used when the AX3000 uses DHCP.

For further technical information about DNS and DHCP click here.

The DNS protocol is available as an optional feature for AX3000 models 65 and 65E (option DNS for firmware 9832).

 The 5250 Printer

The Prt5250 protocol allows to control a printer attached to the AX3000. A printer controlled by this protocol is seen as a standard spooled printer..

In comparison with the LPD protocol, the main benefit of Prt5250 are:
   - the printer is automatically added to OS/400 (the printer is available when the AX3000 is powered on),
   - the printer is accessed through a device (and an outqueue),
   - the printer job manipulation is fully supported.

The 5250 emulation and the Prt5250 protocol are available as an optional feature for all TCP/IP AX3000 models (option I52 for firmware 9832ha).

 LOGIN SCRIPT

The "login script" can be set to automatically enter user names and passwords at the login prompt.

A login script is composed by "expect/send" actions. A login script is an independent session set-up parameter (one script per session).

Example: a typical script:
   - Waiting for "login:"
   - After "login:" has been received, the AX3000 sends "myuser"+<CR>.
   - Waiting for "password:"
   - After "password:" has been received, the AX3000 sends "mypass"+<CR>.

The script login is available as an optional feature for all TCP/IP AX3000 models (option SRI for firmware 9832).

 AX3000 MODEL 65: THE ALPHA-GUI TERMINAL

The AX3000 model 65 offers the alpha-GUI mode: the AX3000 processes text information (video attributes, colours, cursor location, etc.) and displays it in graphical mode (800x600, 256 colours).

This allows:
   - revamping software by associating graphical attributes (shadow, 3D effects, etc.) with display criteria.
   - displaying pictures (GIF format).

For more information about this mode, click here.

This mode is only available for AX3000 models 65 and 65E (option ALG for firmware 9832).

  DHCP: IP ADDRESSES DYNAMICALLY ASSIGNED

The DHCP protocol (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) allows an IP address to be automatically allocated to an AX3000 terminal.

The main benefits of DHCP are:
   - IP address management is centralised (eliminating IP conflicts)
   - pool management is useful for TCP/IP devices which are temporary connected
   - static IP addresses allow the use of the AX3000's embedded print and terminal server

For more information about DHCP, click here.

The DHCP protocol is available as an optional feature for all TCP/IP AX3000 models (option DHC for firmware 9832).

EURO CURRENCY SYMBOL

The Euro symbol must be handled by both the display and the keyboard.

  • Displaying Euro Symbol
Two new character sets are available: ISO 8859-15 (from ISO) and PC-858 (from IBM). Furthermore, for other character sets (PC-437, PC-850, etc), a customised ASCII code can be chosen for the Euro symbol through the AX3000 Set-Up.

  • Handling the Keyboard
The keystroke dedicated to the Euro symbol depends on the keyboard nationality (<AltGr><4> for an English keyboard). If the current AX3000 character set supports the Euro symbol, the Euro keystroke will be automatically supported. Otherwise this keystroke is not used.

Note: AX3000s equipped with a flash memory can be "Euro upgraded" by downloading the firmware.

The Euro symbol support is available as an optional feature for AX3000 models 55, 55E and 56 (option EUR for firmware 9832).

 A 122-KEY KEYBOARD FOR AS/400

A "VT AS400" emulation has been offered by the AX3000 for many years. This emulation allows connection to AS/400 hosts equipped with an Ethernet Card. When a standard PC keyboard is used, this emulation offers dedicated keystrokes to get 5250 terminal functions (<Alt><Del>: Field Exit, <Alt><Pause>: Attention, etc).

Now, a 122-key keyboard, 100% compatible with a 5250 keyboard is also supported by this emulation. This lets the AX3000 feel and behave exactly the same as a 5250 keyboard, including the support of 5250 specific keystrokes.

The 122-key keyboard support is available as an optional feature for all TCP/IP AX3000 models (option F24 for firmware 9832).

A VT KEYBOARD FOR VT EMULATIONS

Originally, VT emulations were used with specific keyboard (20 function keys, PFx keys, etc). Using a standard PC keyboard (102 keys) with such emulations can be restrictive (some keys are not present) and not comfortable.

Now, a full compatible VT keyboard can be connected to the AX3000. This lets the AX3000 feel and behave exactly the same as a VT terminal.

The VT keyboard support is available as an optional feature for all TCP/IP AX3000 models (option F20 for firmware 9832).

  DIALOUT/IP: WINDOWS VIRTUAL COMS

The virtual COM feature allows the Windows operating system to control the Axel Office Server serial ports as standard local serial ports (COM5, COM6, etc). Any software can use standard O.S. commands:
   - to set serial line parameters (baud rate, parity, etc),
   - to set serial output signals (DTR and RTS),
   - to get serial input signal status (DSR, CTS and CD).

Accordingly any serial device (modem for instance) can be connected either to a 'real' COM or to a 'virtual' COM. This is totally invisible to the software (fax control for instance).

At the Windows (95, 98, NT4 or 2000) level a specific driver is needed: this driver is DialOut/IP, which is released by Tactical Software (www.tactical-sw.com).
