CCID-compliant
USB smart card readers can be now used with Axel
terminals connected to Windows.
PC/SC Standard
Most smart card readers are now compliant with the PC/SC standard.
The PC/SC standard is composed of multiple
sections and covers all aspects of smart card
integration from software API's to the smart
card design
The standard also specifies the hardware design of the smart card reader:
A USB card reader must be CCID Class compliant.
Running on Windows
Smart card readers are supported by both Microsoft RDP and Citrix ICA
protocols. The smart card reader management and control essentially passes
through the thin client back to the server. Architecturally the smart card
reader is be redirected in the same way as printer or COM ports.
As such any PC/SC compliant software will
work whether running on a standalone PC or a
thin client.
A typical use for the smart card is for
secure logon. The peer "username/password" is
stored in the smart card. To be authenticated
the user has to insert his card and enter
the PIN code. Security can be increased by an
option which closes the session if the card is
removed from the reader.
